What it is

The Omega-3 Index measures EPA and DHA - long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish and supplements - as a percentage of the fatty acids in red blood cell membranes. It reflects longer-term intake rather than a single meal.

Why it matters

A higher Omega-3 Index has been associated in observational research with better cardiovascular and general health markers. It is one of the more modifiable markers, responding to diet and supplementation over weeks to months.

What “optimal” looks like

Higher tends to be favourable within a sensible range, and levels move with intake. As always, this is general information rather than a recommendation to supplement.
