LDL cholesterol

Also known as: LDL-C, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, “bad” cholesterol

What it is

LDL cholesterol is the amount of cholesterol carried inside low-density lipoprotein particles. It is the most familiar number on a standard lipid panel and is usually calculated or measured directly.

Why it matters

Higher LDL cholesterol is associated with a greater likelihood of cholesterol building up in artery walls over time. It is one of the most studied and widely used cardiovascular risk markers, though ApoB and non-HDL cholesterol can add nuance where particle number and cholesterol content diverge.

What “optimal” looks like

Optimal targets are generally lower than the standard “normal” reference range, and appropriate targets depend on your personal risk. This is general information - discuss your own target with your doctor.

This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
