Kidney

eGFR (kidney function)

Also known as: estimated glomerular filtration rate, creatinine (related)

What it is

eGFR estimates the rate at which your kidneys filter blood, calculated from creatinine (a muscle by-product) together with age and sex. It is the standard way to summarise kidney function.

Why it matters

A lower eGFR can indicate reduced kidney function, and it is tracked over time to spot meaningful change. Because it is estimated from creatinine, muscle mass and hydration can influence it.

What “optimal” looks like

Higher eGFR within the normal range generally indicates good filtering. Single readings can fluctuate, so trends and repeat testing are what clinicians rely on.

This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
