The blood markers that matter most for longevity
A handful of blood markers carry an outsized amount of signal about long-term health. Here are five worth understanding, and what each one reflects.
You do not need to memorise a lab report to get value from it. A small set of markers carries a lot of signal about cardiovascular and metabolic health - the areas that dominate long-term risk for most people. Here are five worth understanding.
1. ApoB
ApoB counts the cholesterol-carrying particles most associated with clogged arteries. Because each such particle carries one ApoB, it reflects particle number, which many lipid specialists consider a more direct cardiovascular risk marker than LDL cholesterol alone.
2. HbA1c
HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months, in one number. It is a cornerstone of metabolic health and helps spot glucose drifting upward long before it becomes a problem.
3. hs-CRP
High-sensitivity CRP is a sensitive marker of low-grade, body-wide inflammation, which has been linked to cardiovascular and metabolic risk. Because recent illness or hard exercise can raise it, it is best read away from those and rechecked before it means much.
4. Lp(a)
Lipoprotein(a) is a largely inherited particle that adds cardiovascular risk independently of LDL. It is usually stable through life, so a single measurement is informative - especially with a family history of early heart disease.
5. Omega-3 Index
The Omega-3 Index measures EPA and DHA as a share of the fats in your red blood cell membranes, reflecting longer-term intake. It is one of the more modifiable markers, responding to diet over weeks to months.
Reading them together
No single marker is destiny, and none should be read in isolation. Trends over time, and the way markers cluster, tell you more than any one value. This is general information, not medical advice - use it to have a better conversation with your clinician.
