Fasting insulin
Also known as: insulin, HOMA-IR (derived)
What it is
Fasting insulin measures the hormone your pancreas releases to move glucose into cells. Combined with fasting glucose it can be used to estimate insulin resistance (for example via the HOMA-IR calculation).
Why it matters
Insulin can rise years before fasting glucose or HbA1c drift upward, so it is sometimes used as an earlier window on metabolic health. It is interpreted cautiously and always alongside glucose.
What “optimal” looks like
Lower fasting insulin within the healthy range is generally viewed favourably. Assays vary between labs, so consistency and trend matter - and interpretation belongs with your clinician.
This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
